Latest Gibbs Gears News

After exhibiting for the first time at the Autosport International Engineering Show last January, Gibbs Gears are looking forward to opening our stand again in 2012. The quality of the leads generated were outstanding and we’re looking forward to generating further business in this sector in 2012

Forming an integral part of Autosport International this two day event is regarded by the industry figureheads as motorsport’s most important technology show.

Taking place over Thursday 12th & Friday 13th January 2012, Autosport Engineering is a dedicated event for specialist technical suppliers to the motorsport and performance engineering sectors.

As a specialist subcontract manufacturer of gears and machined components across a wide range of industries requiring transmission equipment, Gibbs Gears welcome you to come and see us on stand E328 in Hall 9 where we can discuss your projects and show you a range of parts demonstrating some of our capabilities. We’ll have technical staff on hand to review drawings and/or parts and can quickly determine our capability and capacity to meet your requirements.

New Inspection Equipment installed

Continuing our plant investment program we have just installed a DuraMaxTM, from Carl Zeiss

This new, compact, 3D coordinate measuring machine (CMM) brings scanning to the shop-floor. Featuring Zeiss VAST XXT sensor technology, it replaces all types of gauges, from ring gauges to form measuring machines.

Complete with the GearPro software suite adding greater capability for the measurement of involute gears.

With manufacturing becoming more efficient, tolerances and materials becoming more demanding, our value to customers is increasing due to our flexibility and quality.

Whether manufacturing a ‘one-off’ part, or production volumes’ the same manufacturing and inspection processes are followed.

Gibbs Gears specialise in low to medium volume production and having continually invested in the latest high accuracy machines we’re well placed to compete for your business.

Autumn 2011

  • New Gleason-Pfauter P90G Gear Hobber installed October 2011
  • Lorenz LS86 Gear Shaper installed September 2011
  • AS9100, Revision C – almost there !
  • All systems go for production of Wheel Tug M1 prototypes
  • Four new Apprentices start September 2011

Gleason-Pfauter P90G

Gibbs Gears has again taken the opportunity to invest in the latest technology with the recent arrival of a new P90G auto loading CNC Hobbing machine. The investment is crucial for our commitment to a large European OEM to ensure we can meet both the increased demand and the required stocking levels.

This machine will greatly enhance our current Gleason-Pfauter P60 and significantly increases our current capacity and capability with the additional feature of gear grinding using the latest in CBN and form grinding technology. This technology is suited for compressor gear surface finish requirements and particularly suitable within the Aerospace sectors and high-end markets.

Lorenz LS86

A further Lorenz CNC Gear Shaper has been added to compliment our existing LS256 CNC Gear Shaper. This increases our capability and capacity for gear shaping. Both gear Shapers are key equipment for medium to large batch production for customer requirement highly accurate work with fast cycle times.

AS9100 Accreditation

Gibbs Gears achieved the LRQA standard AS9100 in May 2010 and we are now working to Rev C with our sights set toward SC21 during 2012. Achieving supply chain improvement is critical to the continued competitiveness of the UK aerospace and defence industry.

WheelTug

You may have seen news of Gibbs Gears being one of the key project partners for the Gibraltar based American company Wheel Tug. The risk sharing agreement is for the design, development and production of a special gearbox to be assembled in the Wheel Tug system. “The partnership has massive potential growth for the Company”, explained Phillip Maurice, Sales Manager, “and is an exciting step towards the company’s ambitions of becoming a centre of excellence in gear design, development and manufacture. The first prototypes are currently in production, and these will be used in the M1 testing program planned for 2012.” For more information visit www.wheeltug.gi

Apprenticeships

Two Engineering Apprentices started their careers with Gibbs Gears last September, both having had a successful first year achieving the required certification, have started their second year. This September we have started an additional two Engineering and two Business Administration apprentices in partnership with the Aylesbury Training Group where they will obtain a minimum level of NVQ3. “The Aylesbury Training Group provides the theory and necessary academic qualifications to support the practical experience of the engineering competences of Gibbs Gears. We strive to give our apprentices a complete outlook to our business during their training, and rotate them throughout the various sections of the company, with special attention to the gear cutting and grinding sections,” says Peter Kelly, Manufacturing Manager. Investment in long term young employees is recognised as just as critical as machines and computer systems.

September 2010 - New Apprentices Start

Gibbs Gears start two new Engineering Apprenticeships. Working in conjunction with the Aylesbury Training Group the two new engineers will spend the first 4 months at the training centre before starting practical workshop experience in our facilities.

31st March 2010 - AS9100B:2004 Approved

Gibbs Gears are proud to announce that following a final audit from LRQA earlier today, we have been recommended for AS9100B:2004 approval. Well done to all of the team for working so hard to achieve this !

First Quarter 2010

After an initially slow start to the New Year due to the inclement weather Gibbs Gears picked up the pace to react to the business demands from both new and old customers. It has been good to see the return of some of our established customer base after a difficult 2009. Are we seeing the green shoots of a recovery at last ?

The New Year saw the launch of our new website and thanks go out to the team that worked so hard to complete this, Andrew Wilks of Parker Wilks Solutions Ltd and Phil Mason of Hype Studios.

Plans hatched towards the end of last year came into fruition with the installation of new equipment:
  • two XYZ 1010 VMC's installed in January replacing two of our older CNC machining centres
  • a Jones and Shipman Ultramat CNC Universal Grinder installed in March
  • a Reishauer 300E Gear Grinder also installed in March significantly increasing our gear grinding capacity.
Re-organisation of our shop floor was required to achieve these installations with minimal disruption to our ongoing production.
